About Black River Starlight Reserve

The Black River Starlight Reserve is a specially designated area in west-central Wisconsin that emphasizes both natural conservation and night sky preservation. Covering a stretch around the Black River, this reserve offers visitors a unique combination of riverine ecosystems, hardwood forests, and prairies, along with outstanding opportunities for stargazing. The geographic setting includes gently rolling hills and wetlands that provide habitat for a variety of native species such as white-tailed deer, beavers, and numerous bird species including great blue herons and bald eagles. Established with the purpose of minimizing light pollution, this reserve is one of the few places in the Midwest where the Milky Way is clearly visible on clear nights.

Historically, the area has been important for indigenous peoples and early settlers who relied on the river for transportation and sustenance. Today, the Black River Starlight Reserve appeals to outdoor enthusiasts interested in hiking, canoeing, fishing, and especially astronomy. Several campgrounds and trails allow visitors to immerse themselves in nature, while designated dark sky viewing sites provide ideal spots for nighttime observation. The reserve’s commitment to environmental education and recreational access makes it a valuable destination for both daytime activities and nighttime exploration.
